They entered the clearing and brought with them the smell of blood. Clad in furs and leather, bristling with weapons, they were warriors the likes of which I’d never seen. Huge, hulking forms, dark shapes pricked with those glowing pairs of eyes.
I could not face them properly, for I was bound to a tree, in the middle of a wilderness, helpless as I waited to be sold to the Berserkers.

Review: I picked this up because I was looking for something short to listen to. At first I was enjoying it as it was something different from my usual paranormal romance. It takes place in a more medieval setting, and was kind of refreshing. I liked the narrator, he has this soft Scottish brogue that works well for the story, even though the main character is a female. The beginning did have me a little triggered, yet that was my own personal issues raising their ugly heads. Yet as the book progressed I became more uncomfortable. Discovering that Brianna is only 19 years old and has been repeatedly abused by her step-father left me feeling icky. After finding this out, I had a hard time continuing the book.
I know 19 is technically an adult, but there was a clear age gap between the men and her. I'm not usually a prude when it comes to this type of stuff, but Brianna is clearly broken and it just felt wrong. In the end I wound up DNFing this book, as much as I wanted to finish it I just couldn't bring myself to. It takes a lot for me to DNF a book, especially one I paid good money for, yet this one just made me feel... unsettled. But personally I read for the escapism and this just didn't have what I was looking for.
